Purpose of Meeting: planning for the Harvest Festival scheduled for October 27, 2011. Also to discuss the topics listed below.
Faculty in Attendance: Mrs. Womble, Mrs. Pearson-Griffin, Mrs. McAfee, Ms. Dowdell. There were 3 parents & 3 PTO Officers in attendance, for a total of 6.
Studying Tips (Getting Your Child Ready for MEAP): make sure students get enough sleep and eat breakfast. Parents should know their child’s weak subject(s) in school and should offer assistance. Make sure students are on-time during Meap testing.
Nutrition: give students healthy snacks, not all “healthy” snacks are healthy. Make sure to read the label and check sugar content. Ask parents to send students to school during Meap testing with a healthy snack (i.e., fruit, graham crackers, fruit snacks, etc.).
School Fundraisers: Mrs. Murphy went over a few fund raising ideas. Currently the school has a skating party 10-6-11 planned for cheerleaders and a coin drive for basketball team or vice versa. Mrs. Pearson-Griffin will provide Mrs. Hill and PTO with a schedule of fundraisers being planned by the school and/or other school organizations. We don’t want to run concurrent fundraisers and have parents choose between which event to support. The PTO has decided to hold a bake sale during the winter festival. Also, as a suggestion Mrs. McAfee told parents about a fundraiser option at Chuck E. Cheese. If we schedule a fun night at Chuck E. Cheese, the PTO organization would get 15% of profits raised on that evening. The officers will look into this option and bring information for a vote at the November meeting.
Positive Behavior Support (PBS): Mrs. Womble presented information regarding how this program works and gave an overview of the report from last September vs this September. She also stated that the Joy Store on both campuses needs parent volunteers to help with operating each store. The Joy Stores are available on the fourth Friday of every month and is open from 1:00 pm until 3:00pm. Volunteers will not be obligated to stay for the entire 2 hours, volunteers can work in shifts. There is a new policy at JPA Dexter regarding Joy Bucks. In order to make sure students are spending their Joy Bucks at the Dexter location, bucks are now color coded by month. Students are encouraged to spend all their bucks during the month they were acquired. Mrs. Womble also would like to recruit parent volunteers to be a part of the PBS organization, they meet on the first Monday of each month. For more information or to volunteer, you may contact Mrs. Womble. A sign-up sheet was passed around for volunteers.
SIDE BAR: JPA Dexter has a job board for students to work for teachers who need assistance. Students must apply for a position, find a reference and interview for the job. Once they have been hired and received approval from their home room teacher and parent, the child will have the job and be paid in Joy Bucks. Please note the time the student is expected to work will be negotiated between the hiring teacher and the homeroom teacher. This time will also be communicated to the parent, especially if it requires before or after school hours.
SIDE BAR: Administrators will give the PTO a schedule of both basketball teams. The PTO will look into purchasing pom-poms to sell for the games. We want more parent and school support (Oakman campus) for each team. The parents also want to make sure that the Oakman campus is included in announcements regarding time and location of basketball games or any other sporting events.
Parent Social Event(s): topic not discussed
Harvest Festival: school will provide games, food for a small fee, face painting, arts ‘n crafts and the venue for the harvest festival. The PTO is looking into entertainment (i.e., a clown, magician, puppeteer or someone to do balloon art) for the harvest festival. If we decide to go with entertainment, we need to have approval from Mrs. Gardulescu. The maximum cost for entertainment would be $200. Mrs. Gardulescu would need the following information before a decision is made and/or a check is cut: company info including contact person’s name and phone number, and hours of operation. This information should be given to Mrs. Gardulescu on or before October 12, 2011. Ms. Whitworth has agreed to find information regarding entertainment for the harvest festival.
